The Real Deal Holyfield: It’s almost Mother’s Day. And the first Mom I think of on Mother’s Day is my remarkable Mom, Karen Tse. I’ve also been doing a lot of self introspection on Confidence lately, spurred by the great Lauren Currie and the UPFRONT team.

Lauren posed a question the other day — “How has your mother’s confidence / or lack of affected you and your own confidence?” And I haven’t been able to shake the question ever since. So here’s my observation.

My Mom earned her MBA when I was in eighth grade. She was the sole bread winner of the family, supporting a family of five while my Dad was Mr. Dad — aka cook, clean, garden, schlep to/fro school and practices. As a lifelong business person, my Mom’s favorite genre of book — if you can believe it — are business books. Among her Biz Bibles are: Getting to Yes (Roger Fisher and William Ury), Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Stephen Covey), and Chicken Soup for the Soul (all of them). I grew up with more business aphorisms piped into my ear drums than I knew what to do with.

Here’s what she told me:

1. If there’s a will, there’s a way.

2. If you can dream it, you can be it.

3. Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

Here’s what I wish she would have told me:

💥 If there’s a will, there’s a way. And also, perhaps most critically — you’ll need to help construct / evolve the dominant systems because your will alone, won’t carry you there.

đź’Ą If you can dream it, you can be it. With a lot of help and enablement from mentors, friends, confidantes, coaches and naysayers.

đź’Ą Seek first to understand, then to be understood. You will do more listening than you ever thought necessary and possible. And after you listen, synthesize in your own words, for you and for others.

I love life lessons. And when I think about them, I recognize that being a good person, leveraging my talents and expertise for good, and challenging the status quo was built into my DNA. It’s who I am, it’s who my parents are.

How does this relate to Confidence?
